Bespoke Gas Fire Feature Wall
One of my long-standing clients approached me to design a statement feature wall that would feel like a custom piece of furniture while seamlessly integrating a built-in gas fire, TV, and sound system.
The vision was to create a refined focal point that felt both warm and modern — a perfect blend of natural timber and subtle brass details — while working safely around the technical demands of a gas appliance.
The Brief

-
Built-in gas fire with a centrally positioned TV above
-
Inglenook-style base cupboards on either side with brass-framed glass shelving above
-
Dark oak timber finish throughout
-
Elegant brass inlay detailing for a touch of understated luxury

Navigating Gas Fire Regulations
Before sketching anything, I needed to understand the safety regulations around gas appliances. Could timber and veneer be safely integrated so close to the fire?
I arranged an early meeting with the gas fire supplier and installer — a crucial step in projects like this. Together, we reviewed clearances, materials, fixings, and ventilation requirements. After a few hours of discussion and referencing the manufacturer’s approvals, we established a safe, compliant plan to move forward without compromising the design.

Early Design Development
Armed with clear parameters, I created initial concept drawings using simple block colours to represent each material — brass in yellow, glass in blue, timber hatched, and the fire itself marked clearly.
This fast, practical approach let the client visualise the layout and finish choices without getting lost in early-stage detail. It also ensured that any proposed tweaks would remain within regulation and budget.

Material Selection & Lighting Concept

With the basic structure agreed, we started exploring material options and gathering quotes from trusted manufacturers. The home already featured dark-stained oak and aged brass accents, which became the key inspiration for the feature wall.
During these discussions, the idea of integrated lighting emerged. Thoughtful lighting design was essential — we didn’t want harsh, direct beams. Instead, we planned LED strip lights behind each brass-and-glass shelf, angled gently to illuminate the rear panels and create a soft backdrop for art and decorative pieces. This would add depth and ambiance while keeping the room’s lighting subtle and refined.

Advanced Visualisation

Because this was a high-value project, the client wanted to see the design fully realised before committing to production. After securing a design deposit to cover the next stage, I developed a detailed 3D model of the feature wall and, by request, created a full 3D room model.
This wider perspective helped refine furniture placement, test scale, and avoid costly changes later. To bring the concept to life, I commissioned a CGI render based on my 3D model, showing the interplay of materials and how the integrated lighting would enhance the finished space.

Technical Detailing & Manufacture

With design, cost, and schedule approved, I transitioned to the technical design phase.
For a project with this level of complexity — especially one involving a gas fire — precise documentation is essential. I prepared comprehensive workshop drawings, including:
-
Exact material specifications and finishes
-
Manufacturer-approved fixings and required ventilation
-
Exploded 3D assembly models showing construction methods and installation sequence
I worked closely with the appliance fitter to validate the fire wall plan and ensure the final construction would be fully compliant while achieving the sleek, built-in look the client wanted.

Outcome
The finished feature wall is nothing short of a showpiece — a seamless fusion of design ambition and technical expertise. The rich dark oak and brass detailing create a sense of tailored luxury, while the integrated gas fire, TV, and sound system feel effortlessly built-in rather than imposed. Subtle backlighting transforms the shelving into a curated gallery, adding depth and atmosphere without overwhelming the room.
Every detail — from the precision joinery to the hidden fixings and compliant fire-safe construction — was considered, refined, and executed to perfection. The result isn’t just a feature wall; it’s the statement centrepiece of the entire space, balancing craftsmanship, safety, and modern living in one bespoke design.
